The ELEMENTS REIMAGINED

Name: Polonium
Atomic Symbol and Mass Number: Po [84]
Electron Configuration: [Xe] 6s 4f 5d 6p
Atomic Radii: 168 pm
Electron Affinity: 183.3 kJ/mol
Oxidation States: −2, +2, +3, +4, +6
Electronegativity Value: 2.0
Elemental Group: Metalloid
Uses and Properties:
-
The alpha rays emitted by polonium can be used to eliminate static electricity produced during processes such as rolling paper, wire, and sheet metal.
-
Polonium is also used in anti-static brushes to eliminate dust on photographic film.
-
It is sealed in brushes to control the radioactive emissions.
-
Polonium is a radioactive, extremely rare semi-metal. It is reactive, silvery-gray, it dissolves in dilute acids, but it is only slightly soluble in alkalis.
-
It is fairly volatile: about half of a sample of it will evaporate within 3 days (unless it is kept in a sealed container).
